Colleen Hoover, you have done it again....
Colleen Hoover's books always have a lasting effect on me, but this one in particular has had me thinking about it since I read (devoured) the final pages of the book. This book is told in dual personalities, from our protagonists Sydney and Ridge. This book is a love story, but not the kind that you expect. Sydney's boyfriend, Hunter in the beginning of the book is, for lack of a better word an asshole. He expects Sydney to be the perfect girlfriend who waits on him hand and foot, who will listen to his problems but not listen to hers and even though she's with him, I could tell she wasn't entirely happy or content with her life.
This is where we meet the elusive, Ridge (sighs dreamily). We meet Ridge from across a balcony, where he is playing the guitar (double sigh) but Ridge knows something about Sydney's life that she doesn't, her boyfriend is cheating on her with her best friend/roommate, Tori (See what I mean by asshole?) and not just once but since they got together, years ago.
Ridge is stuck in a rut, he has the tunes and notes to play but he doesn't seem to be able to write any lyrics for them, but then he notices the girl sitting on the balcony, singing to a song with no lyrics. He knows he has to talk to her, maybe she can help him, but they don't expect that they become each others inspiration.
Ridge has to tell her about Hunter's asshole behavior and with the secret out Sydney finds herself with nowhere to live, so Ridge offers her to stay in his apartment for free if she helps him write music for his band.
But here's the unexpected part, Ridge is deaf. He also has a girlfriend who is partially deaf.
Sydney and Ridge have unbelievable chemistry but also a deep connection, and the more time they spend together writing and just hanging out the more their connection grows. They speak through texts and Facebook messages as Ridge has not spoken since he was a young boy due to a form of mental abuse from his parents.
Ridge has one person in his life who he'll do absolutely anything for and that's, Maggie, his girlfriend. Which is beautiful and heart breaking as Ridge develops feelings for Sydney yet he knows exactly what this would do to his relationship with Maggie, but he can't help it. Both relationships have their flaws as most relationships do, but I think what makes them both special is that they are both honest and true. Ridge never forgets Maggie, in fact it's because of Maggie that Ridge see's his wrongs.

Ridge loves Maggie, so much so that sometimes it seems like he wants to wrap her in a bubble to protect her from the hardships and evils of the world because he cannot bear to see her hurt or upset, he doesn't want anything or anyone to let her down. Yet he can't help but do it to her, despite his best intentions.
But, Ridge also loves Sydney for all she's giving him. She's his inspiration, she stirs feelings in him that he didn't know he could posses. Ridge admires Sydney for her determination to help him, he loves her kindness and gentleness and he loves that she accepted him as he was with no expectations. He loves that he can share his music with her.
I was unsure for who to root for sometimes, which is unusual especially in romance books. This books love triangle is something I've never come across, I didn't know who I wanted Ridge to be with. At times I thought that Maggie was a little too much to handle but then sometimes I felt like slapping Sydney for even being in certain situations in the first place. But in the end I loved what Ridge and Sydney shared, he was almost desperate for her but he never acts on it, not completely. They kiss once while Ridge is with Maggie, but the beautiful, heartwarming moment they share before hand makes me see how it leads to that one kiss.
“Never in all my life and in all my years of living in a world of silence have I wanted to hear something as much as I want to hear her sing right now. I want to hear her so bad it physically hurts.” - Ridge. Maybe Someday, Colleen Hoover.
Ridge places his ear on Sydney's chest as she sings, and he feels her sing. This scene in this book gave me goosebumps, leaving me thinking 'Colleen, you are simply too much to handle sometimes'. It was cute, lovely, unique, beautiful but most of all it showed how close they had become. I am simply in love with this couple.
It's time to talk about Sydney, this girl was a fighter.
“I don't want to be someone's second choice.”
― Sydney. Maybe Someday Colleen Hoover
“You should take note that simply because a girl makes your dick hard, that doesn't mean you have to go shove it inside her.”
― Sydney, Maybe Someday.

She's not a love at first sight girl, she thought Ridge was cute, sure. But it was the music that brings these two together. Their connection grows steadily and as Sydney develops these feelings she only has one real problem with them, she does not want to be a Tori. She doesn't want to be the reason anyone's relationship ends, but she loves him. Sydney fights her feelings every step of the way, sometimes a lot better than Ridge does. Sydney knows what it's like to be on the other side of a cheating relationship and she likes Maggie, I think that's what kills her most she wishes Maggie was evil and manipulative but she's genuinely a nice person, and that makes her feel worse about Ridge.
In the end I admired Sydney's independence, knowing that she has to give her heart time to recover from not one bad incident but two, Hunter and Ridge have put dents in her heart and she's not sure how much time she needs to recover, but I liked that she didn't jump into any form of a relationship. She needed time for her, which again I thought was unusual in romance novels because normally the woman only have one concern and that's getting the guy, but not Sydney she needed the space to get her life back on track and give her perspective on the situation she got herself into.
It may seem like I've given away a lot in this review but honestly this is just the tip of the iceberg with this book, overall I think that this book is stunningly written and the story line is unique and well thought out which is always a plus. I read this book over the space of one night, I started at about 10p.m. and continued until after 3a.m. so if that doesn't prove how addicting Colleen Hoovers novels are, I don't know what will.

Rating; 4.5 out of 5 glorious stars. < Mainly because I WANT A SEQUEL! :'D
Favourite Character; It's impossible not to say it was Ridge.
Favourite Scene; I have two. 1st, When Ridge feels Sydney sing for the first time.
2nd, Sydney learns to sign 'When' for Ridge after he speaks to her.
Favourite Quote; 1st place; “We try so hard to hide everything we're really feeling from those who probably need to know our true feelings the most. People try to bottle up their emotions, as if it's somehow wrong to have natural reactions to life.”
2nd place; “Sometimes in life, we need a few bad days in order to keep the good ones in perspective.”
I cannot leave this review without mentioning the fantastic album from Griffin Peterson, called Maybe Someday. These lyrics are in the book, either written by Ridge and Sydney or just Ridge by himself. I love this album, Griffin's voice is sexy, exactly how I imagine Ridge ;). his voice is also rough, honest and sincere and the lyrics are beautiful. Hoover has proved herself again, after the Slammed series I didn't think her poetic writing could get much better but she proved me wrong. Again. The album has 8 songs on it, my favourites being;
- I'm in Trouble. 'The way that you move when you're in that dress.'
- Maybe Someday. 'For her I'd bend, for you I break.'
- Living A Lie 'You don't know me like you think you do, pour me one when I really want two.'
- Let It Begin 'Won't you just let it begin, won't you just say when.'
But I really do love them all, I think they portray the book so well and listening to them I can figure out exactly which moment they were intended for even if they are not entirely specified in the book. I love that this is a real thing, I wish every book came with its own music inspired by it or written about it. I WANT THIS FOR EVERYTHING! :'D
Now that I've finished this book, I feel like I'm in a slump. I know nothing I read next will live up to this one, but I will carry on.
I need her new book already! :'D
Bye for now lovelies, keep reading! Micaela J
